Top Reasons Why Car Batteries Fail Prematurely

April 2nd, 2017|Battery History, News, R & J Batteries|

Your car's battery is the lifeblood for many mechanical and electrical components that are responsible for its overall performance. When something goes wrong with your battery, your car is not going anywhere fast - if at all. Without a healthy battery, your car’s engine may not start, and most electrical accessories will not function adequately, if at all. It goes without saying that when there is a problem in this area, things can get stressful. The lifespan of a car battery can vary depending on several factors including how often it’s used, overall vehicle condition, battery quality and the battery’s suitability to the application. The real concern is if you have a relatively new battery that starts showing signs of trouble. This post will outline some of the most common issues associated with a relatively new(ish) battery that fails to deliver consistent, reliable starting.  Too Little, Too Often Cars are a fantastic way to get around, however their convenience makes it a little too appealing to drive when you could have walked. Car batteries struggle with frequent use in the form of short trips which can eventually deplete the level of charge. Cranking the engine to start your car can draw hundreds of amps from your battery. Once the engine is running the alternator begins charging the battery, but car batteries only accept charge at a relatively slow rate, so you may need to drive for some time to fully recharge / replace all the power used to start the [...]

Tips on Properly Comparing Flooded LEAD-ACID BATTERIES

March 31st, 2017|R & J Batteries, Tips, U.S Batteries, Uncategorized|

Tips on Properly Comparing Flooded Lead-Acid Batteries Compare the Right Data When Shopping for New Batteries By Fred Wehmeyer, Senior Vice President/Engineering U.S. Battery Manufacturing When it comes time to purchase new batteries for your golf car fleet, most fleet managers want to get the most for their money. It’s common practice to compare various batteries to see which will give them the best balance of longevity and reliability that fits their budget. With so many choices and information, it’s important to make sure you’re comparing “apples-to-apples.” The problem with comparing batteries is that manufacturers don’t always use the same testing conditions, so the ratings and advertised data on one battery may not be the same on another. To make a proper comparison, the first step is to make sure the batteries have the same internal construction (Flooded vs AGM vs Gel). You also need to make sure that the voltage output is the same and that the capacity ratings are similar. This is where it can get confusing for many golf car owners and fleet managers. Battery manufacturers don’t always use the same testing criteria for ratings and cycle life data. For example, two similar batteries can show cycle life data that may not be an accurate comparison because they are often based on selective data from the manufacturer. Comparing Depth of Discharge Typically, cycle life data is obtained by discharging the battery to a fixed depth of discharge (DOD) until failure. DOD is the percentage of amp-hour (AH) [...]

Tips to Extend Car Battery Life

March 27th, 2017|News, R & J Batteries|

It might not surprise you to hear that the number one cause of vehicle breakdowns is a dead battery. If you want to avoid the inconvenience of unexpected breakdowns, then one of the best things that you can do is to take care of your battery. This post hopes to outline some top tips that will help you get the most out of your car battery so that you don’t end up stranded and waiting for a jump start. Inspect Your Battery Regularly The type of battery fitted to your car will determine how often it should be checked. Batteries with removable caps are referred to as “Low-maintenance” batteries, and this type should be checked every month or two for signs of acid or corrosion build-up around the terminals, and for adequate electrolyte levels. Maintaining correct electrolyte levels is important – too little and battery performance and life are diminished, too much and excessive corrosion of terminals and brackets may result. If in doubt, ask your local mechanic, auto electrician or R&J Batteries store to check and top up for you. If corrosion build up on terminals is evident, wash away with hot water and rinse thoroughly then dry, and finally apply a lubricant spray such as WD40, CRC, etc., or even a specialist battery terminal spray for maximum protection. Maintenance-free car batteries are becoming increasingly common, and these are easily identified by their flush, sealed top. Sealed Maintenance-free batteries often have a built-in hydrometer or state-of-charge indicator. Simply check [...]

GARTNER SIXES CLIPSAL

March 7th, 2017|Clipsal 500, Racing, Sponsorship|

GARTNER SIXES CLIPSAL The high-flying Stadium Super Trucks returned to the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide for the third time on the weekend with Penola’s Greg Gartner once again piloting the #410 R&J Batteries truck in the three-race event. Amidst a line up of international stars including Robby Gordon, Sheldon Creed and ex-V8 Supercar pilot Paul Morris, Gartner more than held his own to finish a consistent sixth in each of the three races.  Teething issues with the truck during Thursday’s practice and qualifying sessions put Gartner behind the eight ball early in the weekend. “Unfortunately we did a power steering belt during practice then the afternoon's qualifying session was also cut short when we broke an axle. So we only had limited time to test and re-acclimatise to the truck, leaving us to chase set-up all weekend. Because we are not in SST all the time every lap is very valuable to me to get to understand how the truck works, especially as we spend most of our time racing on dirt, not tar.” “Everything started to fall into place in Sunday's final race, but it was cut short and we only got 4-5 racing laps in due to Dontas’s roll early in the race. But it was the best the truck had been all weekend, after some changes to the setup and adjustments to my driving style. You need to be aggressive with these trucks and be prepared to rub panels. I generally have kept it clean, and everyone else doesn’t mind swapping a bit of paint, so we need [...]

Battery found to be top cause of breakdowns in commercial vehicles

January 30th, 2017|Commercial Batteries|

An extensive, year-long survey into the causes of road transport breakdowns in Australia has revealed the humble battery as the number one offender, accounting for up to one-third of all breakdowns, particularly in later model trucks which typically have more cabin accessories and higher electrical power loads. R&J Batteries recognised this growing trend early on and decided to be proactive in finding a solution. Our Hardcore range of commercial batteries has been designed specifically to address the growing problem of premature battery failures in severe-service applications, particularly long-haul road transport. We’ve gone “all out” on the Hardcore range, incorporating a number of major performance improvements including, but not limited to:- Features: Significantly thicker positive and negative plates Silver-Calcium Powerframe plate grids  Taller plates, increased surface area  Dual Glass-Mat/Envelope separators Hot-Melt Lock-Bonded elements Airtight Inter-cell sealing rings Maintenance-Free in serviceable casing Benefits: More durable, longer-lasting Highest resistance to heat and corrosion More reserve power for accessories Enhanced cyclic ability and plate integrity Improved vibration resistance Lower self-discharge, stronger joins between cells Safer, lowest water loss, maintainable Note – not all features available in all models, please check product data sheets for batteries suited to your application.
